Tecumseh, Building No. 10, was constructed as a gymnasium in 1915 at a cost of $35,000. The building has been remodeled several times since its erection. Tecumseh, Shawnee chief, was born in 1768 in the village of Piqua (near the present Springfield, Ohio). The word Tecumseh means Shooting Star. At the age of sixteen he took part in his first attack against the white settlers. It was after one of these earlier raids that Tecumseh first witnessed a common act of torture. He was so shocked and filled with horror that after he became Chief he would never allow a prisoner to be tortured by any of his people. He was chosen Chief and leader of his tribe when he was young. He tried, without success, to organize the Indian tribes of the Great Lakes Region to resist the advancement of the white settlers. When the War of 1812 broke out, Tecumseh led his followers to the support of the British. He was made a Brigadier-General and became the first of two American Indians to hold such a position; the other was General Ely S. Parker of the Civil War. Tecumseh was killed in battle in October, 1813, at the age of forty-five. The National Historical Society has requested that Tecumseh be a permanent building on the campus. #American #building #component #education #geography #gis #Haskell #hiawatha #hinu #history #Indian #Kansas #ku #landmark #Lawrence #model #nation #native #school #sketchup #university
