I've recently been doing a large number of longer prints overnight and have had a few where the filament has run out and continued to print. Which is very annoying.
Now that I'm using OctoPrint to run my printer I'm able to install a plugin that will detect whether there is filament going into the extruder. I have my printer in an enclosure which is smaller left to right so I'm using a different reel holder so I wasn't able to use the existing filament sensors on here. I have a bunch of these lever switches laying around:

So I designed a mount that will attach to the holes in the top of the extruder body and feed the filament through keeping the switch closed. Once the filament runs out the switch opens and using the Filament Sensor Reloaded plugin my printer will pause and move the print head and wait for new filament to be inserted and the print to be resumed :D
The holes are supposed to be 2mm and I used some 1.5mm copper rod to hold the switch in place and help hold the two halves together as it was a very tight fit. As I printed it in ABS some acetone was also dripped along the seam and the whole thing clamped while the two halves bonded.
