a nightstand is a small auxiliary piece of furniture used to trim objects, usually placed next to the bed, serving mainly to store objects that may be needed during the night. it is also called a bedside table and a maiden. the word nightstand has a probable origin in the literal translation of the english word dumbwaiter. although it currently means a small domestic freight elevator, it once had the meaning of auxiliary furniture for disposing of dishes and cutlery. according to the encyclopædia britannica (1911 edition), such furniture originated in england in the late 18th century. in the english language, this word has been attested since 1749. in the brazilian dictionary of the portuguese language, by antônio joaquim de macedo soares, published in 1889, the term appears as a synonym for bidet and "velador", described as "bedroom furniture, placed at the foot of the bed, and on which put the candlestick with the candle, the box of matches, the glass of water, etc.; it has a marble top, a little drawer, and two shelves with a door where you keep urinals". it is a compound term, deriving, by analogy, from the created noun, for being an auxiliary mobile, and silent, that is, mute.
