I didn't have a piece of PVC pipe handy when I was wanting to print with some sample filament on my Prusa i3 Mk2, so I "designed" and printed out this tube for my filament holder. It's hollow, of course, but I put some splines down the inside to strengthen it a bit.
It was probably overkill, but it filled a need and I still use it -- even though I now have a bit of PVC lying around.
The end hubs fit over the little spool nubs on the filament holders. I recommend this spool holder for the Prusa: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1940105 , by area51, as the unique attachment clip works very well.
I made two - one at 100mm long and one at 140mm. I ended up using the longer one more often as it let me fit a special sample holder spool. If you only need 100mm, you can save time printing the shorter one.
