Stevelduct

A Stevelduct combines an aqueduct network and the technique of stevelen - sailing on a river in downstream direction using the hydraulic gradient to ship’speeds up to twice the flow velocity. The Stevelduct concept has competed in the Zuid-Hollandprijs 2010 for sustainable solutions for accessibility. The concept is to put containers in barges that just fit in the aqueduct. The aqueduct is constructed with a slope thus driving the barge transport. It claims to be an emission-free, safe and extremely efficient transport mode, transporting 4.2 million containers without human involvement. Perhaps this is an alternative for transport of containers by rail, trucks or inland navigation.
