Stanard's 1891 Refrigerator

On 14 July 1891, John Stanard, an African-American from Newark, New Jersey, was granted US Patent No, 455,891 for his innovative Refrigerator. In the introduction to his patent application he said, “This invention relates to improvements in Refrigerators; and it consists in certain novel arrangements and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.” One of the clever features of Mr. Stanard’s refrigerator was the provision of cold, clean water from a tap on the front of the device (nothing new under the sun, I guess.)
