This rib was developed in response to the NASA Space Apps 2016 Origami challenge, and its purpose is best explained by watching these videos:

One thing to be aware of when printing these is that each rib in sequence is intended to be a slightly different size. The model included is too large for normal 3D printers but I would suggest scaling down to 1:35. Each rib is scaled by a factor of 1.023% over/under the adjacent rib (placed 10 degrees apart - that's an exactly 20% increase over 180 degrees)... and will simply form a torus-type design if you print out a whole bunch at the same size. If you do intend to create the exoskeleton type structure shown in the movie, you will probably need glue or other adhesive to attach the "cross-bar" pieces, and also where the ribs "hook in" to the ribs on the level above. Would love to see it if anyone decides to do it as a project.
