The Spartan-class escort carrier is an experiment with the new Lancer fast attack fighter. The Lancer was a perfect fighter for escorting convoys due to its small size, amazing speed and manueverability, and its suprising firepower for its size. It's problem was it's lack of an FTL system. The Spartan carrier was designed to allow a dozen Lancers travel with a convoy through FTL jumps, and for firepower against heavier targets such as frigates.
