The Chinese Protector’s Office is located on the other side of the Township, near Wheelwright’s. A grainy photograph, plans dating from 1857 and descriptions in the Protector’s official letters were used as references for the façade and internal layout of this building. Our building: The interior of this building is not set out as a re-created 1850s interior. Rather, it contains a modern display where visitors can learn more about the functions of the Protectors and the Government Camp in general, through displays of pictures, plans and documents. The administration of the goldfields, the problems of establishing order in such turbulent times, and the background to the story of the Chinese on the goldfields are complex topics, much in need of explanation. Historical Notes: The original office was occupied by the Chinese Protector, an official whose job it was to supervise the Chinese diggers on the goldfields. He located sites for their camps and set out the positions for their tents, settled disputes between Chinese in court cases and kept a watchful eye on the numbers in the Chinese area.
