Philip Kock’s House is Ærøskøbing’s oldest house. The house was built as early as 1645 by Merchant and Shipmaster Bertel Erichsen. Philip Kock’s House, a characteristic gable house, is typical of the architectural tradition of the region. The house was built as a half-timbered construction, which was normal for 17th century market town buildings. The timber frame is oak. The gable end of the house, facing the street, is a so-called “parade”gable. This type of gable often has several corbels at the horizontal divisions or at the roof storey and upper attic. The front door placed in the Søndergade recess is contemporary with the year of construction and is Denmark’s oldest iron-braced battened door in use in a market town house. The upper transverse piece of timber above the door has an inscription and as the only decoration two small rosettes and two boathook-like figures – decorative elements belonging to the Renaissance. The builder, Bertel Erichsen, chose to place an inscription a so-called paraphrase of psalm 127 from the Book of Psalms above his front door followed by the initials BES for Bertel Erichsen and the year 1645. In 2000 the house was taken over by the librarians Lone and Carsten Meyer who have restored the house under supervision of the Heritage Agency of Denmark and the Historic Buildings Council. Text and pictures used in the model are curtsey of Mr. Carsten Meyer
