This is a 3D printable auxiliary jaw set for clamping and drilling pen blanks or other small square stock in a chuck.
The square notch constrains the rotational direction, so if you were to try turning a piece using this in the chuck a tailstock would be necessary to constrain the piece axially, as the grip of the chuck/3D print combo on the wood would need to be tested for each piece.
The design is based off of the plans (using 1/2" plywood) from David Reed Smith's turning project website. If you want to make a version using wood, I'd highly recommend the guide below. His site is a great place to look for tips, tricks, and great ideas!http://www.davidreedsmith.com/Articles/WoodAuxJaws/WoodAuxJaws.htm
The holes are for adding small magnets to help pull the faces back against the chuck until the chuck is tightened.
Please use appropriate PPE when using power tools, especially lathes! Face shield, safety glasses, and dust mask are a must!
