Update, 02-15-15
I'm waiting on a new hotend then I'll be able to test it out.
This is my latest project, the Slot Bot! It is a large format CoreXY printer with 335mm X 335mm x 300mm (13"x13"x12") build volume. 1.5" slotted angle in 2' lengths forms the main frame of it. One of my main goals was to make a standardized frame that could be built from a locally sourced material. Home Depot and Lowes carry 2' sections of slotted angle as well as longer sections. Menards also carrys it. The frame is very stiff and only requires 3 X 5/16 or 8mm screws at each corner.
I've currently designed it for 5/8" or 16mm rod, which adds to the rigidity. I got a great deal on 5/8" stainless steel rod and I'm using Lm16uu bearings with no problems. I will make a 10-12 mm version of parts in the future since 16 mm rod is a little overkill.
The z-axis is belt driven, utilizing two geared (27:1 ratio) nema17 motors. I've never been a fan of screws.
The heated bed is made from 1/8" thick aluminum plate and fiberglass heat tape as heating medium. It uses 120VAC with a solid state relay so there is no need for an extra power supply. With the higher voltage it draws much less current at 2A. The tape is rated for 400C temperature and is attached to the plate with kapton tape.
