Sheldonian Theatre

Wren's famous Oxford landmark was completed in 1668 after a commission from the Archbishop of Canterbury. The university originally intended the building to be solely for graduations and other ceremonies but today it is also used as a concert venue and lecture theatre. The radical D-shaped design of the building was based on the Theatre of Marcellus in Rome and incorporates an unsupported roof span of 70ft, a marvel of architecture at the time.
