the x-men, also known as the x-men in spain1, are a team of fictional superheroes that appear in american comics published by marvel comics. created by artist / co-author jack kirby and writer stan lee, the characters first appeared in the x-men # 1 (september 1963) 2 in the silver age of comics and formed one of the most recognized franchises. and marvel comics blockbusters, appearing in numerous books, animated series, movies, video games, cards, toys, and other collectibles. the success of this franchise is so great that its second publishing title, x-men, from 1991, became the best-selling comic of all time. most of the x-men are mutants, a sub-species of humans who are born with superhuman abilities activated by the "x-factor" gene. the x-men fight for peace and equality between normal humans and mutants in a world where anti-mutant fanaticism is fierce and pervasive. they are led by charles xavier, also known as professor x, a powerful telepath. his archenemy par excellence is magneto, a powerful mutant with the ability to manipulate and control the earth's magnetic fields. xavier and magneto have opposing views and philosophies regarding the relationship between mutants and humans. while the former works for peace and understanding between mutants and humans, the latter sees humans as a threat and believes in taking an aggressive approach against them.
