This signal box (or interlocking tower) was originally used from which railway signals and points were controlled. It's a design by ir. K. van der Gaast en dates from 1960. Almost identical buildings stood next to railroad tracks near Dordrecht, Gouda and Woerden. This building now exists as the only one of his kind. The characteristic building is a typical architectural example of 'New Objectivity'. In 2001 the building was inhabited after having lost it's function for over a year. In 2006 it was decided not to demolish the building, because it has a monumental status.
