Saguaro is a city located in southern California in Riverside County. It is 165 miles east of Los Angeles, 66 miles east of Palm Springs, 48 miles west of Blythe, and 192 miles west of Phoenix, Arizona. The city lies in the southernmost part of the Mojave Desert, in California’s Colorado Desert region, on the Interstate 10. Originally a census designated place, Saguaro was established in 1921 as a small farm village, a couple of miles east of Desert Center. The town was named after the largest farm there, Saguaro Ranch, which was known for its Saguaro farms. In the 1930s the population had risen to 301, which later kept declining. Later, in 1974, an oil industry investor conceived the “Saguaro Project”, which was to demolish the farms and create a master-planned community for a business and transportation hub between Los Angeles and Phoenix. After the project was completed, the population grew rapidly. Saguaro became a city in 1978, with a population of 7,368. The city has continued to grow commercially as companies move here. The city soon became the center of its own metropolitan area of 453,087 in 1980. Today, the city of Saguaro has a population of 289,166, a metro population of 2,018,247, and an urban population of 1,516,852. New high rises have been completed all over the city, along with the tallest building in the Western United States, Millennium Tower. The skyscraper had its grand opening on March 28, 2016 and rises to 1,088 feet with 96 floors. The city has been known for its upscale environment, livability, high education levels, and beautiful landmarks. In fact, the metro area has an extremely low percentage of poverty, one of the lowest in the United States. Saguaro is even considered one of the most modernized cities in America, and even the world! So come on down and take a tour of a real desert resort! Saguaro is situated north of the Red Rock Mountains, which rise 1,660 feet high, on the shores of Lake Coachella, a 118-acre reservoir formed from filling a deep pit with water coming from an aqueduct. It was one of the main features of the Saguaro Project: “To create some sort of desert oasis for business, recreation, and residence.” The lake has become a popular destination for Saguaro, with many parks surrounding the lake. The main feature of the lake is the Chuckwalla Falls, a 211-foot artificial waterfall used to fill the lower end of the lake. Creation of the falls help power electricity for all of the Saguaro region. The waterfall can also be powered on and off to reserve water quantities, or when there is a big festival of event at Symphony Park. To the south of Downtown Saguaro is Mojave National Recreation Area. The southern banks of the lake are covered by the Solana Sand Dunes, which is a popular destination for recreation and hiking. South of that are the Chirico Mountains which is also popular for hiking up to see great views of Saguaro. Saguaro has an average elevation of 472 feet above sea level, and the city can range from a Semi-Arid Climate to a Hot Desert Climate, with hot, dry summers and mild, relatively wet winters. Temperatures in the summer generally average 90°F, but often exceed 100 °F (38 °C) though with somewhat low humidity. In the winter, high temperatures average in the upper 60s (°F), but may not rise above 55 °F (13 °C) during rainy days. January, the coldest month, averages a high/low temperature of 68 °F/43 °F (20 °C / 6 °C), while August, the hottest month, averages a high/low temperature of 95 °F / 64 °F (35 °C / 18 °C). Saguaro receives around 10.4 inches of precipitation annually with most of it occurring in the winter and early spring, especially January through March, with February the wettest month. Mojave Desert Regional Medical Center (MDRMC) – Large hospital in Saguaro that features over 1,000 beds. The healthcare here has been said to be more advance than any other in Southern California, particularly the Imperial Valley region. Here are some famous parks and recreation featured in the model: 1. Veracruz Park – This heavily forested park consists of over 200 acres of land, including Lake Veracruz, the 30-acre lake that provides great views of Downtown Saguaro. The Saguaro Grand Prix is also featured here annually, reaching a capacity to over 150,000 once they set the race up. When there is no race going on, it is a normal walking trail for tourists. The park is one of the most visited urban parks in the United States, getting over 12 million visitors annually.
