Rothschild Residence by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, Israel, 1965 See link below for a YouTube video with animation. In 1965 Oscar Niemeyer designed an amazing residence for a very arid area – a desert – but close to the coast in Israel. He was in exile and spent half a year in Israel before moving on to live in France. Unfortunately, the project was never realized. It was supposed to be a vacation home for the Rothschild family. The project was implemented with strict geometric forms except for the organic concrete roof line. It seems to be a re-interpretation of the Arabic courtyard house with the garden in the middle and closed off to the surrounding world. However Niemeyer’s interpretation has large hatches for opening up to the outside. We reinterpreted to make a building we would love to live in for a specific location.
