Based on a classification system developed by H. Russell Robinson in 1975, Roman infantry helmets were divided into four classifications: Montefortino, Coolus, Imperial Gallic and Imperial Italic. These were additionally lettered within each group to show significant variations in date and methods of construction. He also classified approximately 30 different types of check guards, which were in use with these and other varieties of Roman Helmets. And while developed during different time periods, ranging from 300 BC to AD 225, it was not uncommon for helmets from all four classifications to be used concurrently during this entire range of dates. The Montefortino type helmet (Classification 1) was based on Celtic / Gallic designs dating from the 5th century BC and was adopted by the Roman Republican armies around the 4th century BC. Their use continued into the 1st century AD with many variations appearing throughout it's time period. The Type A helmet shown dates from the 1st Century BC and includes an attached crest holder and horsehair plume. #armor #army #army_helmet #battle #Galea #helmet #Legion #Legionary #legionary_helmet #military #Montefortino #Montefortino_type_a #Roman #Roman_helmet #Rome #Soldier #war #warrior
