Rochester Castle is one of the best preserved castles in England.
Brief History:
The castle is located on the banks of the River Medway. There has been a castle on that site since past 1066. However, the current castle was built around the 1086 to 1089 mark. In 1127 the castle was given over to the Archbishops by King Henry the 1st. The castle subsequently changed hands many times until in 1216 when it came directly into royal control. The last time the castle saw military action was in 1381 after which the castle fell out of use and into a state of disrepair. In 1870 the castle and grounds were opened as a park which has largely remained unchanged. Today the castle is open to the public and is maintained by the City of Rochester.
The Model:
This model is unusual in the fact that it depicts Rochester Castle as it is today which means it shows the reconstructed tower. This tower, the rounded tower, replaced a square tower that was destroyed in the 1216 siege by King John. The castle went on to withstand another two sieges.
This model is a very simple model. Due to its size, not all of the castles features can be modelled but I have tried hard to give the model a very accurate shape. If you reduce the scale of the model this will dramatically affect the detail.
Due to the simplicity of the model it can be printed with a very large layer height. I suggest a height of 0.2-0.3mm. Furthermore, the fill density can be very low and I used a density of only 10%.
