Reverse Engineering a Replacement Part

One moment I was comfortably resting my arms on my office chair and the next, my right arm was lower than my lap and I was struggling to stay off the floor. The right chair arm-lock button/mechanism failed. Ughh! Unless I want scoliosis by the end of the week, I need a new chair or a replacement button/lock. The long search for a spare part proved fruitless. Time to make my own.

Working with calipers, depth micrometer, gauge stand and fixturing, I modeled the part in SolidWorks. The part was created by SLA 3D printing on a FormLabs Form1. I used "Tough" resin and post-annealed at 405nm. "Tough" resin flexes more before failing with little detail loss.

The custom part worked without issue.
