This is a super simple yet effective way of making enifs Flexing battery holders with integrated spring reverse battery protected. You can get rid of diode input protection if you just don't allow the user to insert batteries the wrong way round!
It's just a shim which you can put into the minus-side of the AA-type holder and secure it in place with a dab of glue.
1.6 to 1.8mm thickness works fine. It depends on what material (wire, copper foil, ...) you use for your contacts.
