3D renaissance thanks to 3D printing!
# 3DSPIRIT
This object is adapted to the manufacturing specificities inherent in the use of HP MJF (Multi Jet Fusion) technology. Indeed, reading the document "HP Multi Jet Fusion Guidelines" has allowed me to improve the design of my room against the printing technology used in this contest.
The 3D object par excellence ... this was the theme of this contest. By relying on the capabilities of HP MJF technology and Autodesk software, this vast subject allowed me to give free rein to my imagination by transposing itself into a process of pure creation.
[INFO I specify that I am also the author of the object "origami" that I also presented in this contest. This object was originally made during the designathon organized by BEST Grenoble and F3DF in Grenoble on November 30, 2017. Having been conquered by this day I have since wanted to increase my chances in the 3D competition SPIRIT by presenting another work much more worked and finally comply with my expectations! ]
I will then tell you the story of my creation.
1) For me the literal term "3D" had to be somewhere in my final creation. In addition I wanted to indicate in a very visible way that my creation was carried out thanks to the printer HP MJF. This is to mark the public's mind in many ways.
First by announcing that HP has already embarked on 3D printing (specialists already know it but not yet the general public).
And secondly by really insisting that this object, although very complex, is actually a single component made by additive manufacturing technology.
2) I think that "the 3D object par excellence" to be exposed, shared and visible to the greatest number to accelerate the adoption of 3D printing and thus unleash its full potential. That's why I decided to create an environment with the mention "3D". This shows some technological prowess achievable through 3D printing.
This environment consists of an exploded egg, metaphor of birth, as well as a cube with 2 voronoi faces (use of an add-in under Fusion 360).
. Finally, the presence of 2 springs keeps the egg in the center of the structure.
3) The choice of the "egg" surrounding 3D is intended to embody a renaissance or new birth of 3D made possible by additive printing. Indeed 3D printing, by allowing to create very complex shapes in a single component, opens promising perspectives in terms of creativity and gives birth to a new way of imagining the design and the design of products.
For me 3D object manufacturing is born with traditional manufacturing processes (molding, machining, forming, assembly) and RE-born with 3D printing (selective sintering by laser, wire deposition, stereolithography, multi jet fusion) .
That's why I chose the name "rebirth of 3D" to symbolize the 3D object par excellence.
I will now explain to you my thoughts on the advantages of producing and designing an object by 3D printing (paragraph a) and how my creation embodies them (paragraph b).
a) It seems to me sensible and more relevant, to speak about the advantages of the additive impression, to compare them compared to what is technically possible today with the traditional means of manufacture. It should also be noted that, in order to make a reasoned choice of a manufacturing technology, I think that it is first necessary to confront selection criteria: the quantity and the desired production times on the one hand and the type of material and the complexity of design to design on the other hand. Indeed, these criteria can strictly determine the manufacturing process to be used.
The MAIN FEATURE of 3D printing is to profoundly modify our creative process. Traditional manufacturing processes forced our mind to reason in terms of manufacturing possibilities (drilling diameter, technical capacity of a mold, wall thickness, etc.). Additive printing proposes starting from a blank sheet and adding the material by superimposing thin layers according to our creative desires. Only the capabilities of the printer (actual production volume, printable font, angle, material type, wall thickness, clearance, and minimum spacing) limit the field almost without limits of possible results.
Moreover this infinite possibility of design finds a concrete application in the manufacture of parts conceived by topological optimization. Indeed these pieces often have a hollow and complex geometry, symbol of the minimum material necessary from a functional point of view.
In summary, I have compiled below a non-exhaustive list of cases where 3D printing is very relevant as a choice of means of production.
In all the cases mentioned below the traditional manufacturing processes could also have been used for production but this would have unreasonably increased the cost.
- production of complex parts (recesses, lattices or voronoi structures, nested atypical forms, volume inclusions and joints, etc.)
- complex fabrications made quickly and on demand and repetitive at a lower cost
- production of complex forms in 1 single component
- development of personalized parts *
- production of single parts of prototypes or small series for special machines for example **
* Plastic injection molding, for example, would significantly increase the cost of the finished object requiring a mold for each personification.
** By reasoning in terms of cost and production time, the level of balance between 3D printed product and product designed by machining or molding is achieved from several hundred units produced.
b) How is my creation the result of my thinking about the benefits of 3D printing?
First, my creation embodies the high level of customization possible with 3D printing. So with the free face on the top of my room, every company that now acquires a HP MJF could thus inform its customers by sending the object "rebirth of 3D" with above engraved the name of their client. It would be the "star" object that announces that with the newly acquired printer, almost everything is now possible from the point of view of creation.
Secondly, my creation, because of its composition (3D literal term, includes in an egg, itself complexly included with 2 springs in a cube with atypical face) embodies the complexity achievable by additive printing. This same complexity being impossible to obtain, in a single component without assembly, with traditional manufacturing processes. This allows me to point out that the 3D printer can design complex structures without performing assembly phases.
Thirdly, the sloping embossed text inscribed on my creation also symbolizes the complexity and customization achievable at will.
Fourth, the condition of the curved egg surfaces and cracks will symbolize, once fabricated, the accuracy, not of 3D printing in general, but of the technology highlighted by this competition: HP Multi Jet Technology Fusion. In fact, the ultra thin layers (80 microns) of this technology will provide a sharp, high resolution result with the curved surfaces that will be printed with a smooth rendering without rough or striated aspects and sharp edges, all reminiscent of a piece obtained by molding (for smooth surfaces) or by machining (for precision of sharp edges).
Beyond 3D printing in general, among the various processes of additive printing I focused first and foremost on the advantages of the techniques of Multi Jet Fusion developed by HP. Indeed, this technique and the HP printer are at the heart of this 3D SPIRIT contest.
Advantages of the HP MJF:
- very fast and identical printing speed regardless of the number of pieces to be printed in the tray
- ultra thin layer for improved printing resolution
- use of melting agents and details applied to the material
- PA12 self-supporting inexpensive polyamide powder used (In the future, HP wants to offer a wider range of thermoplastics and elastomer.)
- rigid or more flexible object according to the thickness of the walls
- post production thanks to the "processing station" system for cleaning, suctioning and recycling the powder.
The HP MJF has spawned a unique process that can truly unlock the potential of 3D printing. We can hope in the future that transformation agents will be able to modify the properties of voxel parts by voxel (3D equivalent of a 2D pixel in traditional printing) from a point of view:
- color
- surface properties
- translucency
- elasticity
- conductivity
************************************************** **********************
To gain flexibility and especially to unlock the potential of additive printing in the case of finished products, one could imagine manufacturing processes where 3D printing could be combined with more traditional techniques to add the benefits of each of the processes.
************************************************** **********************
CONCLUSION:
The whole of the text above makes it possible to accompany the presentation of my object "rebirth of 3D".
This necessary educational explanation is very important to me. It must be understood and perceived according to the classical model of the "instructions of use" in order to understand the spirit of my object! It must, in this sense, be printed (in 2D!) On a sheet to attach with the package containing my creation.
Indeed, my creation can not be enough to embody the 3D object par excellence.
Being novice in the world of 3D printing, my text above was written following the readings of articles on additive printing from various websites that I was able to consult: HP, Kreos, A3DM, F3DF , 3D Prod, 3Dnatives, Sculpteo
