Donkey is tired of relying on others for strength. His friend Shrek and his wife Dragon had always bailed him out with their physical power, but that changed when the Blood Angel Legion, aghast at the chaotic appearance of Duloc's citizens, ordered an exterminatus of the entire planet. The orbital bombardment killed every living thing with sufficient biomass, and only Dragon's heroic dying gesture of covering her husband with her body allowed him to survive, albeit highly disfigured and shriveled beneath the neck.
After days of crawling on the burnt surface of the world, Donkey found an empty suit of power armor, its previous inhabitant having been flash-boiled out of it in the exterminatus. Broken and deranged, Donkey used the last of his strength to crawl into the suit. Its life-support systems kicked on, resuscitating his body but not his devastated mind. His old enemies dead and his true enemies long off-world, he now wanders the barren land of Duloc raving mad, killing everything he sees in an impotent frenzy of revenge.
