The printrbot 1405 overheats consistently just after printing for about 2 hours and causes the filament to bend and get tangled between the direct drive and the extruder. It also does not have adequate power to install a new fan without an additional power source.
I used a heatsink from an old computer and thermal pasted it to the extruder stepper motor and am able to print as long as necessary.
This component is a guide to keep the filament from getting tangled in the heatsink and is also to "filter" the filament on its way into the extruder. Just add sponge pieces with a drop of veggie oil to the "filter" cylinder to help keep your extruder from getting clogged. Salvage a heatsink from an old computer of your own, get one from a friend, ask a computer repair or retail establishment, or buy one online. Thermal paste from radio shack or similar supplier.
