Prince Sergei Mikhailovitch Volkonsky (1860-1937) was an influential Russian theatrical worker, one of the first Russian proponents of eurhythmics, pupil and friend of Émile Jaques-Dalcroze. He was Director of the Imperial Theaters in St-Petersburg (1899-1902) New names appeared in the theaters, such as painters Alexandre Benois,Konstantin Somov, and Léon Bakst with his help. Serge Diaghilev was his immediate assistant. He was still alive during the Russian Revolution of 1917 while in August 1919 he was arrested by the Cheka.He left Russia in 1921. He crossed the border with Finland in the winter on the ice of the Finnish Gulf. He lived in Paris after the emigration. In 1926 he married Mary Fearn French, daughter of United States diplomat J. Walker Fearn and (by her first marriage) a sister-in-law of the former Mrs. Elsie French Vanderbilt. He died in 1937.
