The PPSh-41 was designed in 1941 by Georgi Shpagin. The PPSh was designed as a more simple replacement for the over-complicated PPD-40. Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion of the Soviet Union, had reduced the resources availible to the Soviets, and this mandated that the PPSh be robust and easy to operate. The weapon was chambered in the 7.62x25mm Tokarev round and was fed from either a 70 round drum or a 35 round box magazine. The PPSh's rate of fire was 900 rounds per minute. This volume of fire allowed the Soviet soldier to outgun his German counterpart who was armed with an MP40 with a rate of fire of 600 rounds per minute. In fact, the Germans captured as many PPSh-41s as possible and this weapon became the second most common submachine gun in German service. After World War II, the Chinese and North Koreans built copies and used them in the Korean War.
