The Post Office Palace in Jókai Street is one of the most characteristics buildings of the inner city of Pécs, and it still operates as a post office. The building constructed in 1902-1904 was designed by the architect Ernő Balázs. The eclectic style of the building includes the Gothic style canopied statues, the renaissance ornamental elements and the flower-shaped Art Nouveau style decorations on the side façade. The roof tiles in different colours, the reliefs of the façade and the coat of arms on the tympanum of the main façade were pieces of art by the Zsolnay Porcelain Factory. The triangular part features the beautifully worked coat of arms, above which two angels raise the Hungarian crown. In the Rákosi era (1949-1956) the workers were anxious about the safety of the coat of arms and, to prevent it from being removed, they covered it with a tin plate. Other ornaments of the building worth mentioning are figures standing in the niches, and the friezes running around the building. In the Post Office Palace there has been an exhibition of the history of the Post Office since 2003, where we can get a detailed insight into the history and the artefacts of the Pécs post office. The curiosity of the permanent exhibition is the structure of the pneumatic post, still functioning today. In addition to the permanent exhibition there are temporary ones to make the building even more attractive.
