This model demonstrates the effect of adult polycystic kidney disease by comparing a healthy kidney with a kidney that is enlarged and disfigured by cysts. Polycystic kidney disease is a leading cause of kidney failure.
The model also exhibits some other major structures that are closely related to the kidneys. The IVC is visualized as a darker shade of red because it returns venous, deoxygenated blood back to the heart for oxygenation. The abdominal aorta on the other hand is a bright shade of red because it carries freshly oxygenated blood to the abdominal organs.
