Pocahontas Building No. 2 was built in 1931 at a cost of about $90 000 as a dormitory for commercial girls. It is now used as a womens residence hall. Pocahontas Hall was named after the famous Indian princess Pocahontas daughter of Powhatan an Algonquian chief. Pocahontas was born as Matoax Princess of White Feathers or Snowflakes. She was later given the name Pocahontas which means %92%93playful one by Maccomac the ancient one. She saved the life of Captain John Smith when he was captured by her father; she also helped other colonists and British prisoners. She was taken as a hostage to Jamestown in 1613 by Captain Angall. She was converted and baptized with the name Rebecca. She married John Rolfe at the Episcopal church in 1pril 1614. Because of this marriage there was a peace for eight years between the settlers and the Indians. In 1616 Pocahontas her husband and their son Thomas went to England where she was well received by the people. She became ill when they were preparing to return to America and died in Gravescend England in March 1617. She is buried at Gravescend Church cemetery in England. There is an oil painting of her in the Capitol in DC. A monument dedicated to Pocahontas is in Jamestown Virginia. Pocahontas holds a special place in American legend and history as an Indian princess who saved not only the life of Captain John Smith but also the lives of many of the first colonists in Virginia.
