The Shade Promenade is a walkway sunken beneath a sloped sidewalk path that provides a shaded space for patrons to stroll/meander through the site off the beaten path above. The promenade works great as an entrace to a sunken or raised building/landscape or perhaps an off-street gathering space. The design itself has many dynamic features happening at different levels and different scales. Taking inspiration from the structure that forms the Jay Pritzker Pavillion in Chicago's Millenium Park, a dozen 18x18x24 TENSHON shade sails in ivory are hoisted in a series of jumping arch structures that snake playfully up the path in the same back and forth motion that a user of the space would experience. The sails not only shade the path and make it an inviting and pleasant space to occupy for prolonged periods of time, but their slightly tilted 'umbrella'-like frame drains rainwater into the large planters present on the site--making the structures a sustainable asset to this sunken landscape. The planters themselves also serve a dual purpose as they are planted to create habitat for any wildlife that may be displaced by this path's installation, but their form and placement encourage patrons to slow down and extend their stay on the path by forcing them to weave in between the structures--this experience is juxtaposed by the faster straight sidewalk path above.
