Nieuport 11.C 1 (Model BB–XI)
Born a Racer, Raised a Fighter
Flying off the drawing board of Gustave Delage as an entry in the 1914 Gordon Bennett Air Race trophy contest, the Nieuport Type XB was accompanied by a French patent and a comprehensive licensing agreement. The fates decreed otherwise, however, and this nimble racer quickly evolved into a potent aerial combat fighter, the Nieuport Type (or, Model) BB–XI.
The primary structural component that was featured in the French patent was the tiny aeroplane’s unique sesquiplane wing configuration. In other words, an aeroplane which has a significantly reduced lower wing chord versus the upper wing’s chord or width. This sesquiplane configuration along with the unique rudder shape became hallmarks in the Nieuport fighter lineage.
Manufactured by Britain, Italy, Russia, and France this diminutive darling leaped into the air over the trenches of the Western Front and ended the German air superiority known as the “Fokker Scourge.” Now, officially referred to as the Nieuport 11.C 1, this aeroplane became affectionately known as Bébé or “baby.” Although, contrary to popular belief, this “baby” appellation was not due to the petite size of the aeroplane. Rather, according to renowned French aviation historian Jean Devaux, the nickname Bébé was due to the official Nieuport model number used for this aeroplane: Model BB–XI.
Regardless of the Nieuport 11C.1 size or the derivation of its unofficial name, this aeroplane quickly set the stage for an aerial arms race that would continue throughout the duration of the Great War.
The Model
This model has been designed to print on any 3D printer with a 6-x 6-inch build bed. The scale is roughly 1:25. Practicing careful building techniques, you can easily build a museum-quality model of the Nieuport 11C.1. A special assembly guide has been prepared for guiding you through the building process.
And please note, the recommended cement for construction is Testors Cement for Plastic Models (#3501).
Enjoy.
