I wanted something more elegant than a hole in my drywall for thermostat wires and much smaller than a full size gangbox. Any thermostat could use this, but the hole pattern above and below the hole are specific only to Nest (that I know of). Attach this with sheetrock screws to the stud and sheetrock as if it is a normal gangbox, but you will have less drywall to remove. I cut my drywall boxes with a flush cut rototool, so it is easy to mount, but there are otherways to make the hole in the drywall. Make sure you snake the line into the box prior to attaching drywall.
