This is the future desk that I have been always dreaming about. While working with CAD/CAE/CAM experts for years, communication and mobility is the key to efficiency and success in the design process.

Traditionally, designers usually working in their own cubicle alone. When there is a design meeting with project or sales managers and clients who has no experience in CAD, communication problems often come from lots of 3D details are really difficult to present within 2D PowerPoint slides. Even though meeting in front of the designer's computer and reviewing the design, there is still lots of communication waste from back-and-forth in model rotation, zoom in or out, or changing colors and materials, etc. There are also problems when working with machine shop technicians. Efficiency often lost in the back-and-forth between designer's desk and the machine shop. In addition, there is a fundamental problem with this traditional type of communication - No direct eye-contact and immediate facial expression response.

This desk design is trying to provide face-to-face communication, but without losing privacy while working alone. It has a mobile robot base and rotatable side screens and table with integrated Kinect and Leap Motion sensors. Three surrounded high resolution monitors provide designers better impressive experience. Built-in LeapMotion and Kinect enable designers gesture manipulation to their designs (Here is a demo by Elon Musk: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNqs_S-zEBY). Whenever there is a meeting, just send the desk to the conference room. The desk mobile robot base with the Kinect will navigate to the right location (Here is a demo from Google Willow Garage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aHUkSgIweE). There still have time to get a cup of drink. Rotatable and height adjustable design of the side table and monitors helps fit into small spaces and provide each side in full resolution and manipulation for reviewing design. More importantly, the audience can see the design and designer simultaneously and the designer can immediately get the audience's facial response. The face-to-face interaction is significantly increased with this configuration.

In addition, it can also navigate to machine shop and make design changes right away. Moreover, it can also be used as a tele-presence while working remotely (here is a demo from Suitable Technologies: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-upe-01EPQ).

Most technologies are out there already like navigation of the mobile robot, gesture control, or telepresence. The day that this futuristic desk come out might not be too far away.
