The musket, evolved from the arquebus, is a firearm that dominated the battlefields until the second half of the nineteenth century without source]. It was then replaced, initially by percussion rifles, and later by retro-rifles, such as the French Chassepot and Prussian Dreyse. The word moschetto has, however, been used in Italy in very recent times, and under this profile please refer to the appropriate section. Both the archibug and the musket originally adopted the same firing mechanism, with the difference that while the archibug was kept in place by supporting it to the chest during the fire, the musket saw the introduction of calcium, which allowed To put the weapon on the shoulder and to get more precision. With regard to the fire system in the beginning, the fence mechanism was used, followed by the wheeled one and finally - far more modern - the one with the flint. In fact, the term 'musket' in Italy was also used beyond its technical meaning, in fact in Italian it would be more correct to define a rifle all flameproof weapons ('focile' is the flint mechanism, which results in the term 'rifle'). Since this semantisation of the difference between the musket and the rifle is of the Italian language, and was not used in the other (including those of nations militarily very present in the Italian military scene), it was not imposed on contemporaries. For example, a rifle in English is considered synonymous with a 'rifle' term referring to the groove of the barrel, while the musket identifies all firearms, regardless of the powdery mechanism, the smooth cane, which are equipped with calcium and advance. #musket
