This is a device to quickly and easily patch a mosquito net. Mosquito nets are one of the simplest and effective ways of reducing the chance of contracting Malaria. The net is used to protect a sleeping person from biting insects, especially mosquitos. It is critical that the net is tucked in all around the sleeping area, and that no part of the person under the net is in direct contact with the net. The device patches the net, or secures a spare piece of mesh to patch the hole.
Holes or tears in the net compromise the effectiveness. Sewing can be used to repair tears, but this can be labour intensive and a poorly sewn repair also leaves openings for mosquitos. When a hole is burnt in the net, sewing without a patch can cause bunching, reducing the effective size of the net.
A 1.2 mm x 1.2 mm mesh will block mosquitos. Smaller mesh sizes can be used to block other biting insects; however airflow can be significantly reduced. This is a concern in hot climates.
I would like to experiment to determine the minimum achievable mesh size. I feel like the pegs and their snap locking mechanism will also need some adjustment before the device works really well.
This locking mechanism could be used to attach clips, weights, or decorations for children to nets.
