Mogwai are demons that inflict harm on humans. “Mo” derives from Sanskrit “Mara” meaning ‘evil beings.’ They can determine fates of death and desire that tether people to an unending cycle of reincarnation and suffering. “Gui” means the souls of the dead. It has evolved to refer to the ghosts of non-family members taking vengeance on living humans who have caused them pain while they were still living. Many Chinese people attempt to rectify their sins by sacrificing money (usually fake) paper banknotes (also called hell money or joss paper) to the Mogwai. Due to the movie adaptation, “Gremlins,” a lot of information was lost in history. The term Gremlin came from other folklore involving WWII. Gremlin was slang term that Britains Royal Air Force used to refer to those that sabotaged planes. - Mogwai: Evil Beings - Buy Royalty Free 3D model by Kyle DeGroot Art (@kyledegrootart)
