As the cost of 3D printing is quickly being reduced and the quality is being improved, it is important to use it to replace costly equipment. Camera sliders are widely used in taking photographs for art and marketing, so by reducing cost they can become more widely accessible.
This design is meant to be a cost-effective option for beginners and the everyday person, the modular design of both the track and legs allow you to customize it for your own needs. With one end piece the track can be continuously extended with further track additions. Extensions utilize the leg holes to maintain an clean aesthetic. Most standard sliders are of fixed length and offers no level of customizability. Additionally, due to the versatility 3D printing personalized designs can be embossed onto the track and legs
Moreover with the standard legs the slider can be displaced a maximum height of about 75mm, however the legs can be further extended by 129mm t o provide additional height of 91.2mm. Height may also be adjusted by altering the angles of the legs by 15 degree intervals, this also provides the ability to create smooth slopes for angled shots and may be useful on uneven surfaces. By combining the use of variable leg angle and length a wide range of slider positions can be achieved
Due to its modular nature, the Modular camera slider quadpod is highly portable. As all components are less than 254mm in length it can be easily disassembled, packed compactly and transported. In addition, due to the low density of PLA a 900mm length track with standard legs can be constructed with a mass of 477.57 g, while a similar length track available in the market made from light weight aluminium has an approximate mass of 2600g, about 5 times heavier than this solution.
The initial design was meant to be only for cameras with screw base mounting, however as the design progressed potential was seen for a cellphone adaptor to hold popular cellphone options. The slider was designed to try to minimize friction while keeping the camera stable as well as avoid the pins from legs
