As the allies closed in, the German command was growing desperate. One commander, searching for ways to replace lost tanks at a cheaper cost, hit upon the idea of using the country's many old steam-powered farming tractors and equipping them with armor and a heavy pair of armor-piercing guns to use as makeshift tanks. Only ten were ever built, as issues with smoke obscuring the gunsight, the weight of armor needed to protect the boiler, and a poor turning radius all contributed to an expensive, disastrous, but quite cool-looking failure.
