Finally got around to making a box for my Millennium Falcon model for X-Wing miniatures game. The box keeps it safe and takes up a little less space than the nice clear plastic it came in.
Because it is a big part and because the lid needs some strength on the Z axis, good layer bonding is important for this part. The box could split as it cools (as large prints are prone to doing). The best way I have found to increase the layer bonding is:
1) crank up the nozzle temp to get the layers to melt together well. For this I did it out of ABS at 255 C
2) Enclosure will help cracking caused by rapid cooldown as well. I have a really ghetto setup with taped up fabric right now (worn out tshirts, heh) Even a mediocre job of enclosing the printer can help a lot.
With this print I had no splitting and very minor lifting on one corner.
Because the lid hinge and clasp parts are probably the first failure point, I suggest printing the lid with 100 percent infill, there will be VERY little difference in plastic used, just a tiny bit more in the hinge and clasp area.
