Medieval Pageant Wagon Array

In the Middle Ages, annual festivals were held in most cities for the 'Mystery Plays,' a cycle of plays that followed the Biblical story from Creation to Final Judgment. Temporary wheeled stages, called pageant wagons, were used to present the dramas. Although nobody knows exactly what these carts looked like, I've taken material from several sources and given an educated guess. Here we see an array of six carts. The front right and left carts are platforms for the actors to move; The front center cart represents the Throne of God on the Day of Judgment. Stage Left features a fearsome demonic mouth representing Hell, and Stage Right features a white and gold pavilion representing Heaven. Behind the center stage is a curtained-off tiring area for the performers. Based loosely on the Roman ox wagon by MorBius. #Biblical #cart #drama #heaven #hell #judgment #medieval #pageant #play #stage #theatre #wagon
