Model of the city block in Spokane, Washington, bounded by Main Avenue, Washington Street, Spokane Falls Blvd, and Stevens Street. This block houses the Liberty Building, and a sushi bar called Sushi.com. Constructed nearly 100 years ago c. 1908, the Liberty Building was designed by architect Alfred Jones and is a fine example of commercial architecture in the Chicago School style. It was opened originally as the Kemp and Hebert Building by local store owners Charles Kemp and Henry Hebert, who established the Wholesale Dry Goods Company in 1892. In 1908, the two partners formed the Kemp-Hebert Corp. in conjunction with the opening of their new four-story building. Through the 1920s the company continued to grow and expand until the death of surviving partner Kemp in 1940. From the early 1940s until Liberty Furniture moved in during 1944, the building sat vacant. Liberty Furniture remained open until 1987, after which the building sat vacant again. The building was then renovated by Auntie’s Bookstore, one of the current occupants, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in July 1994. #1994 #Aunties_Bookstore #Downtown #Kemp_and_Hebert_Building #Liberty_Building #Liberty_Furniture #Spokane #Sushi #Washington
