The irrigation facility “magil al Sabani” with its dams “sadd al Sabani” near Zafar, Yemen, is a typical traditional construction for “sayl” water and was developed in the Himyarite period (110 BC - 525/630 AD). During the rainy season huge amount of water was conducted through channels into these large walled fields which were flooded knee-deep.The amount of water was too much to be totally retained by the soil.
