The barren island of Lyökki off Uusikaupunki (Pyhämaa) is c.200 meters wide and 400 meters long. It is located by an ancient archipelago fairway between Turku and Ostrobothnia. The red-and-white chequered beacon is the oldest day beacon in Finland. King Adolph Fredrik approved a motion to build it in 1753 and the construction work commenced the following year. Beacon was completed in 1757. The walls of the tower, which was like a truncated cone in shape, were built of large earth stones and granite blocks quarried on the island. The outer diameter of the foundation is 6.8 m. and the upper part it is 3.5 m. Wall thickness is 2.5 m. at the base. The round cupola roof was built of bricks and plated with lead sheets. The beacon has preserved its original appearance almost intact. The tower was whitewashed. In the cramped hollow inside there was a steep wooden staircase, which led to the landing upstairs. It was possible to keep a lookout on the sea through five small windows that gave a view to five directions. In 1858 the beacon was first painted in two colors: the eastern side red-and-white, and the other sides white. (Text from Seppo Laurell's book Finnish lighthouses, Nemo, Merenkulkulaitos, 1999). Beacon was renovated last in 2012. #beacon #day_beacon #Finland #Lyökin_pooki #Lyökki #LänsiSuomen_lääni #pooki #Suomi #Uusikaupunki #VakkaSuomi #VarsinaisSuomi
