Built between 1859 and 1861, this grand building was built to house the various public offices and utilities for the City of Launceston. The building is of a 'Palatial Italianate' design and is built from brick (rendered over in the 1930s) with Hobart freestone used on the cornerings, weatherings, and keystones with the building being painted with the current colour scheme in 1998. Upon completion in 1861, the main city post office for Launceston was relocated from 47-49 George Street into the southern wing of the building with the arched verandah as well as an assortment of government services in the other parts of the building, with the interior being lit by gas from the newly built Launceston Gasworks. The post office was later relocated to the current site on Cameron Street in 1889 and by 1913, a central corridor was installed, internally linking the 3 main components of the building (originally, each division had to be accessed from the outside via 3 different doors). Today the building continues to host various public services; notably the Community Development Division. The building was difficult to model due to complicated geometry and limited access to the back portion of the building due to public access restrictions with most detail observed from the roof of the D. W. Murray Tower thanks to the cooperation of the Quest Hotel staff. The networks of galvanized steel fire-stairs and vents on the back have been left out due to complexity.
