So I had a bit of time and decided to design some Catan boards.
I have access to laser cutters/3D printers at work and I thought I may as well prepare for the outbreak :)
I was waiting for expansion and I really wanted to play in a bigger group, so a couple of hours in AutoCAD and here it comes :)
Each tile is a hexagon - side 45mm.
There are different parts to download:
2_player_board.dxf - version of Catan for 2 players based on Nick Borko rules.
6_player_board.dxf - version for 5/6 people
tiles_with_designs_and_numbers.dxf - all tiles required for 5/6 people version including number chips
there are some extra files which should make creating your own design easier
The design addresses some issues I have encountered while playing original Catan.
All tiles are tight fit (you might want to scale up a board tiny bit if you want a bit of wobble), in original game little move of the board was resulting in a mess on the table. In my design tiles sit tight together and you can move board around without messing up your setup
TIles are slightly taller than the board, I find it super frustrating to try to remove the tile from original Catan baord, these ones are slightly higher so you can grab it on the edge and remove it.
Number chips are pressed inside the resource tiles, again it gets messy. Very often dice end up on the board and end up shifting number tiles. It saves time fixing them :)
Harbours images and trade ratio is much more visible than in original design (you can see it from the other side of the table).
Harbor tiles are inserted in the board - in original version it gets really messy with harbour tiles.
It just looks "mine" and gives better feel of the game IMHO.
I am currently desigining cards which you can print yourself.
I strongly encourage buying original Catan to support developers!
Catan was orignally designed by Klaus Teuber.
