Brief Labyrinth Introduction:
It's an ancient spiritual tool that is thousands of years old. This archetype appears in many different cultures. It's origin is from sacred geometry in nature - the spiral, the circle the double helix.
There are several labyrinth designs. These include Classical, Medieval and contemporary. The Essence 7-circuit labyrinth is based on the Chartres Cathedral Labyrinth which was built around 1200. Chartres has 11 circuits and lunations (lunations are the outer cusps and foils that encircle the Chartres style 11 circuit Medieval labyrinth. There are 28 per quadrant.
It is not a maze, which confuses and challenges with tricks, confusions and dead ends. A maze is meant to make you lose your way - in contrast a labyrinth is meant to help you find your way. The path is circuitous - one way into the centre and the same way out. It is meant to calm and quiet the mind. It is a tool for meditation.
I have included designs for a Chartres 11-circuit (but without the lunations for space reasons), a 7-circuit, a mirrored 2-handed labyrinth on a single base as well as a larger mirrored 2-handed double on 2 separate bases (which can of course be used in tandem or individually. If used together I have also provided a connecting pin so they can be used side by side by one person or back to back for 2 individuals to use simultaneously.) The pin is fairly small and delicate so should be printed as a solid rather than with infill for greater strength.
(My thanks to Leslie at Centre Street Labyrinths in Stratford, On. for the inspiration to create these and for the information shared above and to the Stratford Public Library MakerSpace for their help and for printing several copies for different patrons.)
