John B. McCreary House (The Abbey), Cape May NJ

This Gothic Revival 'maritime residence' was designed by Stephen Button and built for a New Jersey state senator. It cost $20,000 to build in 1869, and was located across from the massive Stockton Hotel (demolished early in the 20th century). As time passed, several additions were built onto the house and the porch on the north side was enclosed. The property survived the 1878 city fire unscathed, unlike much of the rest of the city. Early in the 1900s, the original slate roof (which was formed of hexagonal tiles) was replaced, and by the time it was photographed for the HABS survey in the early 1970s, it was home to the Christian Science Society and painted white with a green asphalt-shingle roof. It has since been partially restored and is now home of The Abbey, a bed and breakfast. This model shows all of the details of the as-built house; the kitchen addition has been retained though the ugly bathroom enclosure on the south side over the porch and a few retrofitted bay windows have not been shown. This is one of the most architecturally famous buildings in the City of Cape May.
