Jigsaw, Tessellating Hexagons, Pascal's Triangle, Number Patterns
Hexagons tessellate in unique ways, allowing the exploration of special number patterns along diagonals, such as the Pascal's Triangle. They are useful in K-12 mathematics for all sorts of algebraic or geometric activities. For the curious mind, please try to expand (a+b)^3 and look at the coefficients in a^3, 3a^2b, 3ab^2, b^3.
After playing around, I decided to design the hexagon pieces with holes to allow flexible pattern-making and printing. Also included are a set of blank hexagons, on which you can write your own numbers or symbols (stickers work too) and a set of numbers 1-7.
Notes
Feel free to make as many hexagons or numbers to serve your audience.
Use two colors of filament to print both hexagons and numbers. They are reversible!
Each number pin has the same number on both ends.
You may need more of certain numbers than others, depending on your goal.
Have fun!
