The IBM line of Electric Typewriters was first introduced in1935 with their Electromatic Model 01which utilized the then conventional moving carriage and typebar mechanism to operate, a system that would eventually be replaced by the fixed carriage / typeball mechanism of the IBM Selectric introduced in 1961. The Model 01and its’ variants would remain in production until the introduction of the IBM Model A Electric typewriter in 1949, followed by the multi-colored Model B in 1954, the Model C in 1959, and finally the Model D in 1967, which would be the last of the IBM Electrics using the moving carriage and typebar mechanism. In addition, during the 1940s and 50s, modified versions of the Electromatic, together with the A. B, and C models were uses as console typewriters or terminals on many early computers. This model depicts a standard1954 IBM Model B-1 typewriter with extended 15 in. carriage.
