Hórreo y vivienda en el Villar

Hórreo asturiano. This is a typical country side building in my homeland Asturias. It is completely made of oak wood and fitted with wooden pins and no steel nails needed. The hórreo is raised on stone stilts to protect the grain from rodents such as rats and mice. Note the horizontal stone atop each column (pegollu). The rodents may be able to crawl up the colunm itself, but they can't walk upside down on the underside of the capstone. The stairs to the hórreo often have a flip-flop section on the top, that makes it easy to create too large a gap for rodents to jump.
